LightSpeed Derby is a partnership of organisations in Derby that has been working to bring high quality, reliable, affordable and consistent superfast broadband to Derby so that:
- local people can benefit fully from online content and services, in particular those provided by local businesses
- local businesses can grow and compete effectively in the global market
- local public and voluntary organisations can deliver new and useful services to Derby residents
Superfast broadband is therefore vital for Derby, to make it an even better place to work and live.
LightSpeed Derby has been working proactively to attract telecommunications providers to bring superfast broadband for Derby and has already had many successes.
These include the recent announcement that BT is investing further in the city with six out of eight of Derby’s telephone exchanges to be upgraded to superfast broadband by the end of 2012 – ensuring that 80% of residential homes and 90% of businesses will have access to superfast broadband by the end of 2012. Virgin Media will also be upgrading their Residential service from 50Mbps to 100Mbps this year, improving the service available to those living in parts of the city with access to cable.
LightSpeed Derby will continue attracting new providers into the city to ensure that there will be a choice of providers in order to keep costs low and services at the highest quality and will continue to raise awareness throughout the city of the opportunities and benefits that superfast broadband brings to residents, businesses and voluntary organisations.
LightSpeed Derby is supported by funding from the East Midlands Development Agency through Derby City Council’s Single Programme.
